Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1621 thaler Dav-6476
This specimen was lot 244 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$457 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Celle. Christian, Bischof von Minden, 1611-1633. Taler 1621, Andreasberg. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. Aversumschrift endet auf BRUN.ET.LUN. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle, Christian, bishop of Minden, 1611-33, thaler of 1621, Andreasberg mint, for the St. Andrew mint. Obverse legend ends with "BRUN.ET.LUN." Very Fine.)"
The duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle, formed in 1520, fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover. The duke was also bishop of Minden and a passionate defender of the Lutheran cause. He was killed in a battle of the Thirty Years War. This type was struck 1619-22.
