Künker sale 386, lot 4982

This specimen was lot 4982 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,098 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT DEM 14. JAHRHUNDERT KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich III. 1688-1701. 2/3 Taler 1689, SD, Stargard. Münzmeister Siegmund Dannies. v. Schr. 148; Dav-283. R Geprägt mit überarbeitetem Stempelpaar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (electorate of Brandenburg, Frederick III, 1688-1701, two-thirds thaler of 1689, Stargard mint. Rare, struck with reworked dies, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

In the late seventeenth century, the price of silver forced the thaler to rise from 72 kreuzer to 90 kreuzer, making them uneconomic to produce for many German states. Brandenburg, among others, responded by issuing a large variety of gulden (sixty kreuzer) at several mints. The SCWC notes KM 555, 556 (1689-LCS), KM 557 (1689-IE), KM 558 (no mintmark), KM 559 (1689-BH), KM 560 (1689-SD, shown here, struck 1689-91) for 1689.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 16.78 g.

Catalog reference: KM 560, Dav-246; v. Schr. 276.
