Künker sale 352, lot 1814

This specimen was lot 1814 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,366 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN, BRANDENBURG-ANSBACH, Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, 1757-1791. Dukat 1779, Schwabach, auf die Erneuerung des Ordens des Brandenburgischen Roten Adlers (Ordre de la Sincérité = Orden der Aufrichtigkeit) in Hochfürstlich Brandenburgischer Roter Adlerorden. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und Ordensband//Ordensstern in gekrönter, von Ordenskette umgebener Kartusche, unten die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 79 ·. GOLD. Leicht gewellt, kl. Kratzer, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Charles Alexander, 1757-91, ducat of 1779, Schwabach mint, on the renewal of the Order of the Brandenburg Red Eagle. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right with order sash; reverse: star of the order in crowned cartouche, order chain around, date below. Slightly wavy, minor nicks, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The merger of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth in 1769 doubled the size of the margrave's realm yet in 1791, he sold out to Prussia and moved to England, perhaps anticipating the coming storm of Napoleonic armies.
