Künker sale 354, lot 5365

This specimen was lot 5365 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN, BRANDENBURG-ANSBACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, 1757-1791. Konv.-Taler 1786, Bayreuth. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtvolle Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, 1757-91, convention thaler of 1786, Bayreuth mint. Very scarce, especially in this quality, superb patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The merger of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth in 1769 doubled the size of the margrave's realm yet in 1791, he sold out to Prussia and moved to England, perhaps anticipating the coming storm of Napoleonic armies. Altho issued after the merger, this thaler is still listed for Brandenburg-Bayreuth.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 28.08 g.
