Kunker sale 293, lot 298

This specimen was lot 298 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €80 (about US$108 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN. Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, 1757-1791. 20 Kreuzer 1787, Schwabach. Münzmeister Peter Anton Kolb. Münzwardein Johann Friedrich Westphal. Mit LX : ST : am Anfang der Rückseitenumschrift und kleinerer Krone. Slg. Wilm. -; Slg. Grüber (Auktion Künker 267) 4730. R Vorzüglich. (margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, 1757-91, twenty kreuzer of 1787, Schwabach mint, with small crown. Scarce, extremely fine.)"

The margrave sold out to Prussia in 1791 and retired to England, who in turn yielded them to Bavaria in 1806 as part of Napoleon's mediatization. This denomination was issued starting in 1760 in considerable numbers. This type of 1787 is the last. It is also listed as KM 255.1 under Brandenburg-Ansbach. The reverse legend "LX ST: EINE FEINE MARK", that is, "60 to the fine mark," indicates a face value of one-sixth thaler or a quarter gulden.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Slg. Wilm. -, KM 274.
