Künker sale 354, lot 5364

This specimen was lot 5364 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,654 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN, BRANDENBURG-ANSBACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, 1757-1791. Konv.-Taler 1785, Schwabach. Äußerst selten in dieser Erhaltung. Kabinettstück. Stempelglanz. (Germany, margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, 1757-91, convention thaler of 1785, Schwabach mint. Extremely rare in this quality, cabinet piece, uncirculated.)"

The merger of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth in 1769 doubled the size of the margrave's realm yet in 1791, he sold out to Prussia and moved to England, perhaps anticipating the coming storm of Napoleonic armies. Altho issued after the merger, this thaler is still listed for Brandenburg-Ansbach.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.95 g.

Catalog reference: KM 332, Dav-2027; Slg. Wilm. 1115; Slg. Grüber (Auktion Künker 267) 4687.
