Brandenburg-Ansbach 1779-G thaler Dav-2022
This specimen was lot 610 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brandenburg-Ansbach. Taler, 1779-G. Alexander I (1757-91). NGC MS-64. The finest certified example. Commemorating the Peace of Teschen. Germania is depicted standing among trophies. Blue hued toning on the obverse and gray on the reverse. Sharply struck and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." This type was issued 1779 only (one of five different thalers issued that year) and is listed as scarce. It comes not from the Electorate of Brandenburg (later the Kingdom of Prussia) but from Brandenburg-Ansbach, a Hohenzollern enclave west of Bavaria and neighboring Nuremburg.
Recorded mintage: unknown but quite scarce.
