This specimen was lot 3636 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $552.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brandenburg-Ansbach. Taler, 1778. Alexander I (1757-91). NGC AU-58. Attractive toning with underlying luster. From the Rockaway Collection." This type was issued 1779 only (one of five different thalers issued that year) and is listed as scarce. It comes not from the Electorate of Brandenburg (later the Kingdom of Prussia) but from Brandenburg-Ansbach, a Hohenzollern enclave west of Bavaria and neighboring Nuremburg.
