Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1460

This specimen was lot 1460 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,267 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1623, Bruxelles. Piéfort de poids double. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Coup sur la tranche. Belle patine. Provient de Spink Taisei, Zurich, vente 33, 3 avril 1990, 642. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1623, Brussels mint, piedfort of double weight. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, supporting the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Very rare, rim nick, nice patina, very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

One patagon was 48 sols, stuivers or patards. It was roughly equal to a leeuvendaalder but had about 18% more silver. Patagons are notoriously badly struck but presentation strikes such as this are usually better. Single and triple patagons exist for 1623.
