Sincona sale 76, lot 1013

This specimen was lot 1013 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$12,138 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIUM | Brabant, Herzogtum. Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. Dreifacher Dukaton 1623, Antwerpen. Sehr selten. Gutes vorzüglich. NGC AU55. Feine Patina. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV of Spain, 1621-65, triple ducaton of 1623, Antwerp mint. Very rare. Good extremely fine. Nicely toned.)"

The regular type, issued 1622-36 from Antwerp (with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is scarce but not rare. The multiple ducatons, which include double and quadruple issues, are all rare. An older bust of the king was introduced in 1637 but the Davenport number is the same for both. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 97.44 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 91.66 g.

Catalog reference: KM 58.1, Delmonte (see 274 b), Dav-4442.
