Künker sale 400, lot 437

This specimen was lot 437 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €22,000 (about US$28,541 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN, BRABANT, Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. Dreifacher Patagon 1623, Brüssel. (Engelsköpfchen) · PHIL · IIII · D · G · HISP · ET · INDIAR · REX · Burgundisches Kreuz, zu den Seiten 16 - 23, oben Krone, unten der Orden vom Goldenen Vlies//· ARCHID · AVST · DVX · BVRG · BRAB . Zc . Gekröntes Wappen, umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Belgium, duchy of Brabant, Philip IV of Spain, 1621-65, triple patagon of 1623, Brussels mint, angel's face mintmark. Obverse: Burgundian cross divides the date, crown above, Order of the Golden Fleece below; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Extremely rare, fine patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Patagons are well documented for Philip IV and even the occasional double patagon but triple patagons are rare. This is the first we have posted. The piedfort coins were struck only for presentation and perhaps the recipients preferred the ducaton, a larger coin with the bust of the king. The single patagons struck for circulation are usually unappealing, being poorly struck on bad planchets and often corroded and harshly cleaned.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 84.3 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 84.80 g.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, Dav-4460; Delm-295 b (R3); Vanhoudt 645 BS P3 (R4).
