Tournai 1623 patagon Dav-4470
This specimen was lot 999 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €150 (about US$193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1623. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Un point au-dessus du 1 dans la date. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Petites taches. Très Beau à Superbe. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1623. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, jewels of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Small stains, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Tournai mint 1622-65 and many dates are listed quite inexpensively. Patagons were also struck in Flanders, Artois, Burgundy and Brabant. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
