This specimen was lot 3890 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bolivia. 4 Reales, 1800-PP. Charles IV. EF-45 (Cuzco Hoard)." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia (then called Upper Peru). It was replaced in 1816 by the bust of Ferdinand VII. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number. Assayer PP is recorded for 1795-1802.
