Bolivia 1802-PTS PP 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71294 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1802-PTS PP. Potosi Mint. Charles IV. PCGS AU-53. This well-struck 4 Reales piece is deeply toned with rich purple-gray color. Both sides are well-centered and offer attractive central detail. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1791-1808 at Potosi, Bolivia, in the name of Charles IV. Assayer PP is listed for 1795-1802. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles IV are the commonest mint, ahead of Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number.
