Peru 1800-L IJ 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72110 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1800-L IJ. Lima Mint. Charles IV. PCGS AU-53. A well-preserved example with much remaining luster. The coin's fine details are enriched by its even medium-gray toning with attractive smokiness near the peripheries. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type is listed for Peru 1791-1808 and is scarce, especially in choice condition. Unlike the eight reales, the four reales was not hoarded. Assayer IJ is listed for 1787-1803. The fineness was lowered from .903 to .896 in 1785.
