Bolivia 1750-P E 8 reales
This specimen was lot 253 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,578 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1750. Fernando VI. Potosí. E. 8 reales. Lázaro falta. PLV-SVL-TRA en lugar de PLV-SVL-TR. Redonda. Tipo "Real". Doble fecha y triple ensayador. Bella. Muy rara y más sin perforación. Sólo hemos tenido este ejemplar. EBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VI, eight reales of 1750, Potosí mint. "PLV-SVL-TRA" in place of "PLV-SVL-TR", round "royal" type. Two dates and three assayers, Handsome, very rare, especially unpierced. The only one known to us. About extremely fine.)"
The Spanish colony of Upper Peru produced hammered cob coinage at the Potosí mint from 1573 to 1773, with a major debasement scandal and subsequent reform occurring in 1649-1652. The period 1767-1770 saw simultaneous issue of milled columnarios. The royal or presentation issues are very rare and highly sought after, while the regular strikes vary in price according to the visibility of the date, mint, and assayer initials. Assayer "E" operated 1750-51 contemporary with assayer "q".
