Sincona sale 91, lot 3176

This specimen was lot 3176 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 34,000 CHF (about US$44,928 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, 4 Dukaten 1825, Bern. Gekröntes Berner Wappen in Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Wertangabe und Jahreszahl in Lorbeerkranz. Sehr selten. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. Exemplar der Auktion Hess Divo 313, Zürich, Mai 2009, Los 64. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, quadruple ducat of 1825, Bern mint. Obverse: crowned Bernese arms in laurel wreath; reverse: value and date in laurel wreath. Very rare, About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

This quadruple ducat was previously issued in 1796 and 1798. Friedberg assigns the prior issues catalog number Fr-177, but we see no significant dfference in design. The last Bernese coin is a rappen dated 1836. The confederation of 1848 ended cantonal issues.
