Sincona sale 91, lot 3177

This specimen was lot 3177 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$10,571 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, 5 Batzen 1825, Bern. Probe in Silber. Gekröntes Kantonswappen in Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Konkordats-Kreuz, in der Umschrift darunter die Jahreszahl. Geriffelter Rand. Sehr selten. Fast FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, five batzen of 1825, Bern mint, pattern in silver. Obverse: crowned city arms in laurel wreath; reverse: treaty cross, date below; reeded edge. Very rare, About uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

The first five batzen of Bern was KM 170, struck 1810-11 and 1818. This pattern was struck in 1825 to show the reverse with the "concordat cross", to be used on all cantonal issues. The adopted design of 1826 (KM 196) is very similar. The last Bernese coin is a rappen dated 1836. The confederation of 1848 ended cantonal issues.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 4.57 g.
