Sincona sale 70, lot 3213

This specimen was lot 3213 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 32,000 CHF (about US$42,471 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Bern | Stadt und Kanton. 4 Dukaten 1796, Bern. Gekröntes Stadtwappen in kleinem Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Wertangabe mit Jahrzahl in Lorbeerkranz. Sehr selten. Prachtvoller Erstabschlag. (Switzerland, city and canton of Bern, four ducats of 1796, Bern mint. Crowned arms in a short laurel wreath; reverse: value and date in a laurel wreath. Very rare. NGC MS64 PL, Magnificent first strike.)"

Bern, one of the cantons of Switzerland, struck coins fairly steadily throughout the eighteenth century altho thalers are scarce. The coinage was interrupted by Napoleonic occupation but resumed in 1817. This rare and expensive type was accompanied by KM 157 (8 ducats), KM 156 (6 ducats), KM 154 (double ducat) and KM 148 (single ducat).
