Bern 1796 2 duplone Fr-181
This specimen was lot 3077 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,495 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Doppelduplone 1796, Bern. Fast vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, About Extremely Fine.)"
This expensive type is listed for 1796 while the canton was under the domination of the French revolution. It was struck concurrently with Fr-186, which depicted a soldier on the reverse. In Geneva, this coin was a double pistole; in Luzern, a 24 munzgulden, in Solothurn, a double duplone. The coin is modeled on a double louis d'or of France.
