Sincona sale 91, lot 3167

This specimen was lot 3167 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$264 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Halbtaler 1796, Bern. Gutes vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, half thaler of 1796, Bern mint. Good extremely fine, Attractively toned.)"

This type was struck 1796-97. We don't believe it was struck to the prevailing convention thaler standard (14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver for half thalers). The canton of Bern was invaded and occupied by revolutionary French armies in 1794.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.66 g.
