Bern 1797 duplone Fr-187
This specimen was lot 30799 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "Bern. Canton gold Duplone 1797 MS65 NGC, Lustrous and gem in all respects, this specimen features the representative climbing bear and standing Swiss knight. A marvelous coin with instant appeal and a wonderful pedigree, rare as such. Ex. Eliasberg Collection." This rare type was struck 1797 while Switzerland was a satellite of the French republic. Half (Fr-188) and double duplones also exist (Fr-186). This type was reissued in 1819 and 1829. A duplone was worth about two ducats.
