Belgium 1849 5 centimes
This specimen was lot 872 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €280 (about US$389 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cu 5 centimes, 1849. Petits chiffres. BRAEMT F. avec point. Le chiffre 4 décalé. Superbe à Fleur de Coin . (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper five centimes of 1849, small digits, with dot on engraver's signature, low '4'. Extremely Fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1833-38, 1841-42, 1847-61. In 1861, the type was replaced with a copper-nickel five centimes of smaller diameter. The SCWC mentions large and small "9" varieties but prices them the same.
Recorded mintage: 1,447,000 (a somewhat better date).
