Schulman auction 389, lot 65
Schulman 389-065r.jpg

This specimen was lot 65 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €280 (about US$395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - 2 Thaler or 31/2 Gulden 1841, Silver, LUDWIG I 1825-1848, BAYERN Birth of crown prince Ludwig. Head right. Rev. female figure standing facing raising shield. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS Genuine AU Details. Cleaned." This type was struck 1839-41 and is not rare in lightly circulated condition. Curiously, while the auctioneer's cataloging data is correct, the description more closely matches that of Dav-593. As the thaler shrank from the convention thaler (28.06 g) to the vereinsthaler (18.52 g), the double thaler came back into fashion for commemoratives.

Recorded mintage: 449,607.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, lettered edge, this specimen 37.03 g.
