Künker sale 263, lot 1288

This specimen was part of lot 1288 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), which sold for €800 (about US$1,033 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM Josef, 1834-1848. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1841, 1843. 2 Stück., Felder leicht geglättet (1x), kl. Kratzer (1x), sehr schön und sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Joseph, 1834-48, union double thalers of 1841 and 1843. Two pieces, one tooled, one scratched, very fine and very fine-extremely fine.)"

Despite the small mintage, enough of this 1841-47 type was saved that it is today only scarce, not rare. It is the only double thaler of this ruler, altho single thalers were also struck (Dav-812).

Recorded mintage: 9,400.

Specification: 37.11 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-811; AKS 48; Kahnt 481; Thun 353, KM 20.
