Künker sale 335, lot 3601

The first specimen was lot 163 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €280 (about US$377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Maximilian I. (IV.) Joseph, 1799-1806-1825. 20 Kreuzer 1804. RR Min. Schrötlingsfehler, leicht justiert, vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian IV Joseph, 1799-1825, twenty kreuzer of 1804. Rare, minor planchet flaws, light adjustment marks, extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 3601 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €320 (about US$419 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BAYERN, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Maximilian I. (IV.) Joseph, 1799-1806-1825. 20 Kreuzer 1804. R Feine Tönung, vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian Joseph, 1799-1825, twenty kreuzer of 1804. Scarce, nice toning, extremely fine.)"

This type of 1804-05 is the last 20 kreuzer or 1/6 thaler struck before Maximilian Joseph was promoted to king by Napoleon. Like most billon coins, it is rare in nice condition.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.68 g, 0.583 fine silver, .125 troy oz ASW, 29 mm diameter, the second specimen is 6.65 g.
