Bavaria SB817-22355r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22355 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $199.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 24 Kreuzer, ND (1620). Maximilian I (1598-1651). NGC MS-64. WINGS Approved. Sharply struck with attractive tone and strong underlying luster." The kipperzeit of 1618-23 saw the minor coinage of Germany inflated by about seven or eight to one as the princes of the empire geared up for the Thirty Years War. Some claim this inflationary period wreaked more havoc than the marching, looting and pillaging of the armies. The duke of Bavaria seems to have been an enthusiastic participant as we see kipper 24, 30, 60 and 120 kreuzer in the listings. The duke carefully did not tamper with the major coins, the thaler and the ducat, perhaps to avoid angering the wealthier classes who used those denominations.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, probably debased.

Catalog reference: KM-40; H-59; JB-829.
