Aureo sale 232, lot 120
Steve Album sale 51, lot 3308

This first specimen shown was lot 120 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, Spain, March 2011), where it sold for 100 euros (about US$165 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

1611. Barcelona. 1/2 croat. Bella. EBC. (Barcelona half croat (or half real) of 1611, nice extremely fine.)

The second specimen was lot 3308 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[2] noted, "BARCELONA: Philip II, 1598-1621, AR 1/2 real, 1611, a fantastic example, PCGS graded MS66." The half real was called a half croat in Catalonia but was the same coin. This type is recorded for 1611-19 and is listed fairly cheaply in the SCWC, especially compared to the issue of 1615. Another half croat of 1611 (KM 3) has a long cross on the reverse.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.6-1.7 g, 0.931 fine silver, 16 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 11, Cal. 535, Cayón-4428.
