Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 42827

This specimen was lot 42827 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $3,416. The catalog description^[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. 2 Ducats, 1772-E HG. Karlsburg (Alba Iulia) Mint. Joseph II. PCGS MS-61. A RARE and highly desirable type minted in modern-day Alba Iulia, Transylvania under Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, during his joint reign with his mother Maria Theresa. Fully Mint State and free of any major surface issues or detractions, the surfaces bright with yellow-golden flash and exhibiting only mild wispiness in line with the assigned grade. From the Charles “Cheech” Litman Collection." This type was struck 1768-77 for Joseph II at Karlsburg (mintmark "E"). The SCWC lists it under Austria altho this is an issue of Transylvania. It accompanied a single ducat (Fr-192), which was struck at six mints.
