Austria 1738 thaler Dav-1042
This specimen was lot 4621 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €700 (about US$919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Karl VI. 1711-1740. Reichstaler 1738 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1735 geändert), Graz. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Austria, Charles VI, 1711-40, thaler of 1738, Graz mint, 1738/5 overdate. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"
Austrian thalers for 1738 include KM 1579.3/Dav-1038 (Vienna mint), KM 1610.3/Dav-1042 (shown here) and KM 1639.1/Dav-1055 (Hall mint). This type, struck 1735-38 at Graz, is transitional between Dav-1041 and Dav-1043. Each varies in the arrangement of the drapery and armor on the obverse.
