Sincona sale 23, lot 2995

This specimen was lot 2995 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 18,000 CHF (about US$22,610 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl, 1632-1662 3 Talerklippe o. J. (1635). Auf Leopold V. und Claudia von Medici. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand Charles (1632-62), triple klippe thaler without date, on Leopold V and Claudia de Medici. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This coin was issued on the occasion of the archduke Leopold's marriage with Claudia de Medici in 1626. A similar double thaler exists (Dav-3331). He had previously been bishop of Strasbourg and led his troops into battle during the Thirty Years War. On other occasions, triple thalers were made and sold to local notables at inflated prices as a form of forced loan in times of emergency. These financial emergencies occurred with distressing frequency during the Thirty Years War (1618-48).
