Chile 1791-So DA 1/2 real KM-35
This specimen was lot 45550 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/2 Real, 1791-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VG-8. Variety with legend reading 'CAROLUS IV'. Struck from a heavily clashed obverse die." This transitional type was struck 1789-91 and is actually fairly common. The mintage for 1791 is shared with a half real with the king's name spelled "CAROLUS IIII". The strange incuse letters on the obverse, noted as a clashed die by the auctioneers, could have been caused by a brockage (another, previously struck, coin stuck in the die).
Recorded mintage: 139,000 (including KM 47 and a 1791/0 overdate).
