Sedwick sale 25, lot 1833
Chile Sedwick 25-1833r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1833 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $226.10. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, 1/4 real, 1791/0, Charles IV transitional (bust of Charles III, ordinal IV), NGC VF details/scratches. Darkly rainbow toned with old scratches on bust, scarce and clearly visible overdate. NGC #4715637-013." This scarce and tiny coin was struck in Santiago 1791-92. This mint switched to the conventional "lions and castles" type in 1796. Lima is also recorded as striking portrait 1/4 reales 1792-95 but the bust is of Charles IV, not Charles III as depicted here. The other colonial mints struck "lions and castles" 1/4 reales only. The catalog value is much too low for this type, which appears in auctions once a year or so.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver, .024 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13111, KM-43; CT-1446.
