Heritage sale 3026, lot 24549

The first specimen was lot 24549 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $705. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Napoleon 5 Francs 1813-A, MS61 NGC, a nice lustrous example with faint adjustment marks on the bust. Scarce type in mint state." This issue, from the Paris mint, is a common date of a type struck 1809-15. After the year 14, the revolutionary calendar was dropped in favor of the traditional Gregorian calendar. The twenty francs of Napoleon are divided into seven types, of which this is the seventh. It was demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France during World War One. This type succeeded the "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE" reverse struck 1807-08. A complete set of this type comprises 95 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The entire production run totaled about 127 million pieces.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
