Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34176

This specimen was lot 34176 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1813-MA. Marseille Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-58. Despite falling just short of Mint State status, this wonderful specimen stands as the only representative of the mint and date in the PCGS census and yields a warming cabinet tone. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Argenor in 2006 for $1,276). Ex: Argenor (5/2006) Lot # 439." In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. The reverse was revised in 1809 from REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE to EMPIRE FRANÇAISE and struck in this style thru 1814. This date from the Marseille mint is rather scarce.

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
