Sincona sale 59, lot 1383

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Strasbourg mint (mint mark "BB") in 1803-04. It is a somewhat scarce type and this is a scarce date. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the second, struck 1803-04 (AN 12) with a complete set of this type comprising fifteen date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. This date is common for the type. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One. This specimen was lot 1383 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Consulat, 1799-1804. 5 Francs AN 12 (1803-1804) BB, Strasbourg. Sehr selten. Schön. (France, consulate, 1799-1804, five francs of the year 12, Strasbourg mint. Very rare, Fine.)"
