Sincona sale 43, lot 3757

This specimen was lot 3757 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 42,000 CHF (about US$50,119 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPAIN, Königreich, Fernando V. und Isabel I. 1474-1504 Doble Castellano o. J. (1475-1497). Sevilla . Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabel, 1474-1504, undated double castellano, Seville mint. Of the highest rarity, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

The gold coinage of Spain prior to the rule of the Catholic Kings is rare. Cayón notes that a castellano had a face value of 485 maravedis, making this coin theoretically worth 970 maravedis.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.2 g, gold; the second specimen 9.20 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-2905, Fr-147.
