Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 30003
SB125-30003r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30003 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo (1600 Reis), 1768. Lisbon Mint. Jose I. NGC AU-58. The finer of only two certified examples on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. This nicely preserved and gently circulated example displays a pleasing pale gold coloration with a hint of faint orange on the high points and portions of the fields. The surfaces offer pleasing satiny luster with well-formed devices. Though boldly struck an area of adjustment marks on both sides has prevented complete embossment of the design features in the upper center of the obverse and corresponding reverse. A VERY RARE minor gold issue with few known examples, let alone in this Choice Almost Uncirculated condition, and is sure to excite even the most advanced of collectors." This specimen was offered again as lot 75602 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $1,440. This scarce type was struck 1751, 1764-65, 1768 and 1775-76. The king's name is always spelled "JOSEPHUS" on this denomination.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.58 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-103; KM-245.1; Gomes-Jo47.04.
