Portugal 1776 1600 reis
This specimen was lot 75530 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo (1600 Reis), 1776. Lisbon Mint. Jose I. NGC AU-55. NGC Census: 1, none finer. Delightful yellow to reddish-copper surfaces are fully original and show barely a touch of handling in the fields. Near complete mint luster blazes, especially in the peripheral regions. Some flan adjustment marks run across the portrait (as made), no doubt the result of an effort to bring the weight down to its intended amount before striking. A difficult coin that RARELY presents itself at this Choice About Uncirculated level, and one not to be missed by the specialist." Altho this coin is often catalogued as an escudo, it was slightly heavier and higher in purity. It is listed for 1751, 1764-68, 1775-76 but is seldom seen. This is the first of the type we have posted on this site.
