This specimen was lot 32164 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Jose I gold 6400 Reis (Peça) 1776 MS63 NGC, Lisbon mint. A popular date for the American collector, this Choice Mint State example features highly reflective and nearly prooflike fields. A small planchet defect is noted in front of the face on the obverse." This type was struck 1750-76 in substantial numbers, especially in Brazil. The Brazilian product has either a B (for Bahia) or R (for Rio) mintmark.
