UBS sale 84, lot 1367

This specimen is lot 1367 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL (Münzstätte Lissabon) Maria I. und Pedro III. 1777-1786. Peça 1778. Belorbeerte Brustbilder nebeneinander nach rechts. Rv. Wappen auf gekrönter Wappenkartusche. Kl. Rdf. Fast vorzüglich." (Portugal, Lisbon mint, Maria and Peter III, 1777-86, gold "joe" of 1778. Obv: draped busts of king and queen to right, date below. Rev: Baroque arms. Good extremely fine).

This type was struck 1777-81 but is seldom seen compared to similar coins that were struck in Brazil. Fractions (1600 and 3200 réis) also exist but are rare.

Recorded mintage: 85,681.

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW, 32 mm diameter; this specimen: 14.23 grams.
