This specimen was lot 24537 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold Peca (4 Escudos) 1780, MS63 NGC, fully brilliant, a choice example with excellent eye appeal. Highly elusive in this superior quality." This type was struck 1777-81 but is seldom seen compared to similar coins that were struck in Brazil.

Recorded mintage: 67,283.

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW, 32 mm diameter.
