This specimen was lot 22465 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold 2 Escudos (3200 Reis) 1778, XF45 NGC, very scarce type struck in two years only, boldly detailed with toned luster." The two years noted by the auction catalog are 1778 (shown here) and 1784. The full size peça (6,400 réis) was struck in large numbers in Portugal and Brazil but the fractional denominations are rare.

Recorded mintage: 3,013.

Specification: 7.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, .210 troy oz AGW, 25 mm diameter.
