from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 45857
SB824-45857r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1163 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1163. FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu Vertugadin, 1716B, Rouen. Réformation. D/ B. enfantin à d., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver écu vertugadin of 1716, Rouen mint, reformed. Obverse: draped and armored infant bust to right; reverse: crowned round arms of France. Very Fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 45857 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1716-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XV. PCGS EF-45." This is an écu vertugadin of the Rouen mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[2] notes the 1716-B as common as "flan reformé" (struck over an earlier type) while "flans neufs" are accorded a 20% premium. The specimen shown is a "flan reformé;" the undertype can be see at the top of the king's head. The type was struck 1715-18 in substantial numbers but was replaced by the écu de France-Navarre, which is only 24.47 grams. At the time of issue, it had a face value of 5 livres tournois, which rose to 15 livres in July 1720 but was demonetized in September 1720 at a value of 13 livres, 2 sols, 6 deniers.

Recorded mintage: 600,000.

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, .902 troy oz ASW, 41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, the first specimen 30,33 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 813, Dr/2 № 553, Dav-1326; KM-414.3; Dup-1651; Gad-317.
