H3107-31576r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31576 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted,

"India: Hyderabad. Mir Mahbub Ali Khan II Proof Rupee AH 1323 Year 39 (1905) PR65+ NGC, Hyderabad mint. Type 1. Reeded edge. The largest denomination from the Proof set on offer in this auction, one that remains seemingly unique as confirmed by a paucity of both auction results and certified comparables, where the closest specimens have been the handful of Pattern strikings from earlier in Mir Mahbub Ali Khan II's extensive reign. A beautiful survivor, fully showcasing crisp calligraphic legends and Charminar Gate, encompassed in subdued flash and a fine cabinet aura. The highlight of any collection of Hyderabadi issues that will assuredly be keenly pursued."

The princely state of Hyderabad was one of the last absorbed into the Republic of India in 1948. It was also the largest state and residence of the last remnant of Mughal suzerainty in central India. This type was issued under Mir Mahbub Ali Khan years 35 thru 41. This type is not recorded in proof.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.17 g, 0.818 fine silver, 30 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM Y40.1 (unlisted in Proof).
