This specimen was lot 31571 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "India: Hyderabad. Mir Mahbub Ali Khan II Proof 2 Pai AH 1323 Year 39 (1905) PR63 Brown NGC, Hyderabad mint. Another seemingly unique striking in Proof boasting decidedly crisp motifs one comes to expect from such a designation, enveloped in a uniform chocolate-brown patina and ample glossiness. Sure to intrigue the Indian specialist." The princely state of Hyderabad was one of the last absorbed into the Republic of India in 1948. It was also the largest state and residence of the last remnant of Mughal suzerainty in central India. This type was issued under Mir Mahbub Ali Khan years 37 thru 45 only. Proofs are not recorded for this type. This example, taken from a proof set, is of a date not struck for circulation.
