Jean Elsen sale 112, lot 1340

This specimen was lot 1340 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 950 (about US$1,484 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, première restauration (1814-1815), AR 5 francs, 1814 T, Nantes. Très Rare. Beau. (France, Louis XVIII, first restoration, 1814-15, silver five francs of 1814, Nantes mint, very rare, fine.)"

This type was struck 1814-15 and many of the 31 known dates are rare. This one is very rare; Le Franc[2] reports three known.

Recorded mintage: 5,217 plus 8,721 with Napoleon's bust.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz AGW.
