Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34179
SB125-34179r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34179 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1814-M. Toulouse Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-55. Rather surprisingly falling just short of Mint State status, this elegant minor delights with a paler gray tone that yields to some deeper iridescence throughout. Exceptionally original and highly attractive, as well as the only example of the date and mint in the PCGS census. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Franceschi/Spink in 1986 for $370). Ex: Druso Franceschi/Spink & Son (10/1986) Lot # 966." In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. The reverse was revised in 1809 from REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE to EMPIRE FRANÇAISE and struck in this style thru 1814. This date from the Toulouse mint is very scarce.

Recorded mintage: 28,653[2].

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: KM-692.10; Gad-447; F.205/74.
