Sincona sale 22, lot 1226

This specimen was lot 698 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €180 (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Georg II. 1727-1760. 2/3 Taler 1759, Clausthal. Sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, George II, 1727-60, two-thirds thaler of 1759, Clausthal mint. Very fine or better.)"

This type was struck 1740-60. It is the most expensive of the three different gulden noted for 1759, including a "wild man" type (KM 286) and another "leaping stallion" variety (KM 290). Hannover, linked to the British crown 1714-1837, embroiled England in several continental conflicts the British establishment would rather have steered clear of.
