Sincona sale 75, lot 65

This specimen was lot 65 in Sincona sale 75 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,457 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. Edward VI, Coinage in the name of Henry VIII. 1547-1551. Gold 1/2 crown n. d. (1547-1549), Tower Mint. Mintmark arrow inverted. Selten. NGC XF Details. Schrötlingsriss. (Rare, Cracked planchet.)" The half crown was tariffed at 2½ shillings. This issue was struck in the name of the deceased Henry VIII. The young king was governed by regents throughout his reign, whose bungling of a war with Scotland caused unrest and economic distress. The coinage was debased to pay for the war, a practice continued from Henry's reign.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 grains (1.61 g), gold, this specimen 1.42 g.

Catalog reference: Spink 2399. Fr-176.
